Facebook Appears To Losing Young Users To Snapchat

Facebook SnapchatEvery few months there’s a new study that finds that Facebook is losing the youngest generation to some other social network. In the meantime, the network giant just gets larger and stronger. This latest study from research firm eMarketer states that less than half of U.S. Internet users ages 12 to 17 will use Facebook for the first time this year, as it looks like teen adoption of network is definitely slowing down in the U.S.

In the past, that meant that young users were fleeing to Instagram (which is owned by Facebook) instead, which at least still kept them inside the Facebook company environment. Now it appears that they’re leaving for Snapchat, which on the surface looks to be a chilling development.

When you look deeper at the numbers however, you find that only 2 million user or sos between the ages of 12 and 25 fled the platform. In the grand scheme of things, that’s a drop in the bucket for a company with 2.2 billion active users. Of those that flee Facebook, most actually sign up for both Instagram and Snapchat (although more for the latter), so it’s still not as bad as the headline would make it out to be.

There is one interesting trend that bears watching though. A group known as “Facebook nevers” comprised of teens that have never registered for their own Facebook account is growing. It appears that they skip right past the network, considering it to be for adults and parents, to other social networks. That said, it’s still possible that they will become Facebook users at some point in their lives, especially as they enter adulthood.

This may be important to keep an eye on if the audience for your music is teenagers, although there are still plenty on the platform that will still have access to you and your music. The problem at that point is how active the users are on the platform, but that’s a subject for another post.
