Just What We Need – A TikTok-Like App For AI-Only Videos

We’re all tired of “AI slop” that’s now permeating almost every online social network like a contagious disease. What was once a novelty has now become a burden, as it’s becoming more and more difficult to find content from actual humans. Now comes word that OpenAI (the company responsible for ChatGPT) is about to launch a stand-alone app exclusively for AI-generated video content from its Sora 2 video generation model. Just what we need.

OpenAI Sora 2

The app’s name hasn’t been announced yet, but we do have some details.

A Few Details

Apparently users will be able to create videoclips up to 10 seconds long, but there won’t be an option for the user to upload photos or videos so Sora can use it as a reference.

A user’s likeness can be used in a generated video though, and it’s also been reported that there are safeguards that if another user uses your likeness, you’ll get a notification. What could go wrong?

The app is supposed to operate very much like TikTok, and when it was launched internally to OpenAI employees last week, they used it so much that managers began to complain that it was distracting them from work.

Aside from the obvious problems the app might cause, the big one is still copyright infringement, as there’s still plenty of legal wrangling going on about the training data used in not only OpenAI’s large language model, but just about every other one as well.

I think the best thing about this is that there’s definitely a separation between human and AI-generated content. There’s no head-scratching over “is it or isn’t it” since we know that if it’s on the new platform, then it definitely is AI-generated.

That said, the danger is if these videos become downloadable and are then distributed across other platforms as well. It’s more AI-slop in the user-generated ecosystem. One can only hope that OpenAI is smart enough to watermark each video generated on the platform so it can identified and rejected by other platforms as a result.
