There Sure Were A Lot Of Syncs In 2025
Chartmetric came out with a report that looked at the entirety of the music business (at least from their data perspective) that outlined the realities of music in 2025. Out of all the things that the report mentioned, what caught my attention was the data on syncs for films and TV. Let’s take a look.

Syncs In Numbers
According the the report, there were 2,700 syncs in movies, 1,600 in television, and 1,200 in games.
This surprised me as I would have thought there would be more syncs in TV that movies, since there are many more TV shows on the air. That was not the case though, at least in 2025.
Types Of Syncs
Of the syncs in movies, 73% were new and 23% catalog. New means any song released within the last 5 years.
TV was different. 53% were new and 47% were catalog.
Again a surprise as I would have expected it to be the other way around. We’re always told about how adventuresome music supervisors in television are, but that wasn’t the case last year.
Music Genres
Again a surprise. The genres break down like this across movies, TV, and games.
| MOVIES | TV | GAMES | |
| 1 | Soundtrack | Soundtrack | Game-Pop |
| 2 | Pop | Pop | Soundtrack |
| 3 | Alternative | Alternative | Anime |
| 4 | Instrumental | Rock | Dance |
| 5 | Ambient | R&B/Soul | Argentine Indie |
Yeah, I know. I scratched my head on some of these (Argentine Indie) too. I think the point here is that what works for game music is far different than for film and TV.
Music Moods
Once again there’s big difference in what works for games as opposed to film and TV.
| MOVIES | TV | GAMES | |
| 1 | Blue | Blue | Epic |
| 2 | Dark | Dark | Chill |
| 3 | Warm | Warm | Atmosphere |
| 4 | Sexy | Sexy | Fun |
| 5 | Romantic | Psychedelic | Euphoric |
What the above data seems to point to is that a composer/songwriter can easily drift between writing for film and television, but games are a completely different specialty. There’s also way more opportunity in film than TV, which is completely surprising.
There are a lot more fun facts about the music of 2025 here.
