Apple Music Now Has More U.S. Subscribers Than Spotify

A few years ago Spotify seemed to have an insurmountable lead over Apple Music in paid subscribers. That lead still exists and is still substantial today globally, but in the United Stated Apple Music has now passed Spotify for the first time.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple Music now has 28 million subscribers in the U.S. while Spotify trails with 26 million. This is a milestone that few saw coming, and many see as an ominous sign for Spotify. The post also mentioned that Apple Music’s worldwide and U.S. growth rates are also higher than Spotify’s.

That said, Spotify still has a lead throughout the world at 96 million paid subscribers to Apple’s 56 million. Spotify also has over 200 million subscribers on its free tier as well.

Apple does have an advantage with over 900 million iPhones in use worldwide, each one with an iTunes account tied to a credit card on file. If a user isn’t satisfied with Spotify or another streaming platform, it’s pretty easy for Apple to convert them.

While Spotify seems to be constantly in the news, Apple Music has been much more low key about its progress, yet at least in the U.S., it’s now in the lead in a game that few thought it would win.
