We’ve Seen 3 Important Social Media Trends In 2023

One of the things about social media is that you can be using it every day but not see the big picture. That’s usually because we get focused on a platform or two and don’t venture beyond that much. If you’re an artist that wants to expand your audience however, you probably want to know what platforms are hot or not. Social Media Today keeps track of these things and its latest study found that these are the top 3 social media trends that we’ve seen so far in 2023.

social media trends 2023

1. More people are using LinkedIn

Until recently LinkedIn was seen as mostly a market for corporate job openings and job seekers, but that has changed. This year people are using it more and more, sharing more content, and seeing more engagement. Much of this is a result of the changes over at X (formerly Twitter – see below), where many have fled the platform for something that they deem friendlier. LinkedIn has been the beneficiary of X’s decline.

2. X’s Name Change Not A Hit

If you were a regular Twitter user then you probably weren’t too keen on the its name change to X. According to the study, most people still refer to it as Twitter and their posts as tweets so that mindset hasn’t changed. What’s most surprising is that not everyone thinks that the platform is going downhill, with 16% saying that the experience has actually improved, while almost 21% said it’s about the same as always.

Advertisers are not down with the change though, as 87% stated that they have no intention of advertising in the future. No wonder Elon wants to charge users for the privilege of using the platform.

3. Instagram is more popular than thought

Depending on which study you read, you’ll find that some say that most young people favor TikTok, while others state that in fact Instagram is the leader. Social Media Today’s users much preferred Instagram, but I suspect its users are also older so the data is a bit skewed. This study from Pew Research in 2022 found that 67% of teens between the ages of 13 and 17 still preferred TikTok, although when it comes to social, a year can make a big difference. There’s nothing that leads us to believe that TikTok’s popularity has waned though, although Instagram is still popular even within that age group.

As stated above, when it comes to social media, even a few months can make a difference. Users may be loyal to a platform, but they’re never averse to trying something new if it fits their needs and their peers are using it. That said, these are the 3 social media trends that we’ve seen so far this year.
