The One Thing That Every Music Business Employer Is Looking For

Passion image

I came across the following video and thought it was something that every person trying to get a job in the music industry should watch. Since music business skills are more or less the same for most people trying to break into the business, there’s only one thing that can separate you from the rest, and that’s passion.

Not everyone can be or wants to be a creator in the music business, but there are still plenty of jobs in audio, management, labels, publishing, touring and more. Jobs open up frequently as people move around the industry, often changing career tracks when doing so. That means that there are always jobs opening up, but you have to act fast because the talent pool is deep. And since there are so many more schools zeroing in on the music business these days, the skill level is somewhat equal. Your enthusiasm is the key differentiator when it comes to getting the gig.

Passion for music isn’t the same thing as passion for the business however. Lots of people love making or consuming music but can’t stand the business side of things (most artists make this list). That means you probably won’t want one of the low-level dirty-work jobs that’s the normal point of entry into the business.

Believe me, those jobs are just a stepping stone and things can happen quickly. One of the adages in the business is to be kind to all the assistants at every level, because today’s assistants will be tomorrow’s movers and shakers.

No kidding, all of us who’ve been in the business for a while has seen this happen over and over. If you’re good at what you do, if you’re passionate about your job, you will move fast up the ladder. You just have to be willing to accept the lowest rung to get in the door.

So check out this video for some additional verification.
