Vinyl Albums Sales Week Biggest Since 1991

Best week for vinyl album sales image

Vinyl albums are turning out to be great Christmas gifts, it seems, if the week before Christmas week’s sales are any indication. According to Nielsen Music, it was the biggest sales week for vinyl since it started keeping records in 1991.

The data tracking service found that 921,000 copies were sold in the U.S. The previous biggest selling week was Christmas week of last year with 905,000 copies. As a matter of fact, sales were so hot that week that it comprised 25% of all albums sold!

So what were the top 10 best-selling albums? You might be surprised.

Harry Styles‘ Fine Line (28,000)

Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (12,000)

The Beatles’ Abbey Road (11,000)

The Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack (10,000)

Queen’s Greatest Hits (9,000)

Michael Jackson’s Thriller (8,000)

Vince Guaraldi Trio’s A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack (7,000)

Garth Brooks’ Legacy box set (7,000)

Taylor Swift’s Lover (7,000) and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (7,000)

Everyone expects this record to fall when the latest figures from Christmas week are revealed later this week.

That said, there are 2 ways to look at these numbers. One is that, while impressive, they’re still only a drop in the bucket compared to streaming consumption numbers. On the other hand, vinyl albums are high margin products, and even the meager numbers for each artist named above provide a significant financial boost.

This is a trend that’s not going away anytime soon.
